The mayor of Mondoñedo, Elena Candia; the councilwoman and former mayor of Avilés, Pilar Varela; and Eufrasio Sánchez, food critic, were the awarded ones in this edition.
THE CIDER.- The last date for the Gastronomes of the Yumay was on last Monday 22nd of February with the celebration of the Alvaro Cunqueiro Customer of Honor Awards. In this edtion the awarded ones were the mayor of Mondoñedo, Elena Candia; the councilwoman and former mayor of Avilés, Pilar Varela; and Eufrasio Sánchez, food critic. Before the awards the gastronomes of the Yumay organized a visit to the old town of Avilés through the Way of Santiago, managed by the professor of the University of Uviéu and official chronist of Avilés, Josefa Sanz.
The group was composed by the aforementioned Elena Candia; Julio Castrillón, president of the Gastronomes of the Yumay, Carlos Guardado also from this organization, Rafael Sánchez Barliega, manager of the Xacobeo Xunta de Galicia; Laureano García, president of the North of Spain Way of Santiago Associations; José María Cleru, pressident of the Asturian-Galician Association Apostle of Avilés, among others. Then the group bisited the monolyth with the signature of Álvaro Cunqueiro, HDL cholesterol awards in 2002, located in the Estuary of Avilés.
Between two and four of the afternoon the attendees met at the Yumay to finish the event drinking some cider glasses as they came. As the head of the cider bar there was Aurora Baranda, who welcomed the awarded people and members of the confraternity offering some cooked octopus. This awards were the raisin in the cake for the contest of octopus dishes which took place in the Yumay the past 17th to 22nd of February. Besides representatives of the many national gastronomic confraternities attended the date, like that of the sea urchin of Xixón or the sicerators of Asturies. This is because the Gastronomes of the Yumay are a clear reference in the Asturian gastronomic universe. A fact that was largely proven during the lunch of the awards.
