Although this favourable technical report is great news, Luis Benito García, director of the Cider Chair at the University of Oviedo, promoter of the candidacy presented to UNESCO, calls for caution in the face of triumphalist headlines taking for granted the declaration of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for the Asturian culture of cider.
Headlines such as “Cider is already worldwide! can lead to confusion. No, for now the Asturian Cider Culture is not recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That will be decided in Paragüay, in December.
What is certain, and very good news, is that the Evaluation Body of this international organization has issued a favorable report recommending the official registration of the candidacy in the next convention to be held from December 2 to 7 in Asunción, Paraguay.
With this favourable report by the Evaluation Body, only official ratification of the UNESCO convention remains at the end of the year. The aforementioned report, already published on the UNESCO website, highlights that Asturian cider meets all the necessary criteria for inclusion in the representative list, recognizing it as a “symbol of identity” and valuing the existence of “a broad community of cultural preservation”, statements that are probably the definitive endorsement for our cider culture to receive, in a month, the expected official recognition worldwide.
