Cider threatened by population debacle

With an expected decrease of up to 20% of the Asturian population in just over 10 years, the potential market for cider will be reduced exponentially

LA CIDER. – This is what the article published in this month’s LA SIDRA magazine is about, the first part of an analysis of the situation that is being generated as a result of what has come to be called exodus, population bleeding, demographic hit, or even announced population debacle for those who denounce the political responsibilities of this phenomenon.

The truth is that the policies of planned deindustrialization and destruction of the socio-economic fabric to which Asturies is subjected by the different central governments since the 1970s, has led to an increase in unemployment and job insecurity, which has forced emigration to tens of thousands of young Asturians, thereby favoring an unprecedented drop in birth, which now doubles the Spanish average.

Given forecasts of a population decline that can exceed 20% in some municipalities, with a child under 15 for every four older people, a simple analysis leads to the conclusion that it is urgent to have a Strategic Plan for Cider and Apple –PESMA- that allows to overcome improvised policies and limit clientelistic networks and cronyism.
