It will be held in Xixón at La Montera Picona de Ramón Cider Bar.
LA SIDRA.– Next Saturday 17th of March there will be the 5th edition of the Best First Cider of the Year Contest, with already 45 cider mills, which makes this contest one of the two most important of the country in number of participants.
The contest, organized by LA SIDRA magazine and the ASTURIES XXI FOUNDATION, will be held in a cider bar in Xixón, La Montera Picona, located in 3, Saavedra Street.
On Saturday 17 at 11:00 o’clock, the preselection will be announced, and the 5 finalist ciders will be picked. Then, at 17 o’clock will begin the final tasting with the selected ones to sum the scores and announce the final veredict about the winner ciders.
The attendance at the deliberations will be open to the public, and at the end of the contest the assistants will be able to taste the classified ciders.
The jury will be chaired by Manuel Busto, and will be composed by Joaquín Fernández, Manuel G. Busto, Donato Xoaquín Villoria, Joaquín Fernádez, Eloy Gómez, Ricardo García and Manuel Castro.
The pouring will be performed by La Montera Picona’ s cider pourers that participated in the Cider Pourers Official Championship of Asturies.
The award-winning cider will be the official cider for the seventh edition of the First Cider of the Year, which is the biggest “espicha” or popular drinking meeting in Asturies and which marks the beginning of the cider season. It will be held from March 29th to April 1st at the Museum of the Asturian Village in Xixón.
The award for the Best First Cider of the Year (the only contest that has the cider without blending as protagonist) is an economic retribution of 1,000 euros . For this reason, it has positioned itself as one of the reference competitions of our traditional drink, being the second in number of registered cider mills, and taking into account that the cider making process was delayed this year.
For nine years LA SIDRA and the Asturies XXI Foundation has been struggling for the recovery of cider without decaying, which had practically disappeared from the market due to the industrialization of the cider mills and the generalized application of racking. Every year there are more cider mills encouraged to market this type of cider and participate in this contest.
