Asturian cider: World Heritage?

The Government of the “Principality of Asturias” takes up the UNESCO Project started in 2012.

LA SIDRA.- Ten experts will promote the nomination of the Asturian cider as World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019.

In 2005, the first glass of an Asturian bottle of cider, which still remains open nowadays, was the dissertation topic by the historian from Llaviana Luis Benito Garcia. From his work, the “Principality” decided to support the project, slowed down and stalled until now. To the point that other candidacies which started at the same time as the Asturian one – the Valencian “fallas” -obtained that recognition, while the “Principality” was not even able to present it.

In the spring of 2019, and with the Certificate of Origin Cider of Asturias and the Culture Council support, its candidacy will be proposed to the Spanish Historical Heritage Council.

To the Rural Development Council managing director, Jesus Casas, the Asturian traditional drink is “the origin of all the world ciders”, and its cultural value must be emphasized, as it is still made in the traditional way and mantaining basic processes such as the pouring from a height.

The aim of this project is to obtain the greatest social support, resulting in Facebook profiles such as “Únete para que la Sidra sea declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad” or “La Cultura de la Sidra Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad”.
