Jorge Vargas takes the title of winner in a square that until yesterday eluded him.
Today is a key day in the Natural Cider Festival, we will try to break the record … we will have to achieve the 9.403 + 1 cider glasses.
THE CIDER.- Perseverance makes the winner and yesterday Jorge Vargas (from El Mallu cider bars) finally honored this saying. He was the winner of Xixón’s Official Cider Pourers Championship of Asturies; a title that had previously eluded him -which he had obtained in other places- and for which he now claims to be “amazed”. “My colleagues, among them, Salvador Ondó and Wilkin Aquiles, motivated us to play a good role in these competitions,” said the cider pourer after receiving recognition from the hands of the Councilor for Tourism, Sports, Celebrations and Youth of Xixón, Jesús Martínez Salvador, from the director of the Jovellanos Theater, Teresa Sánchez, and also from Rosabel Berrocal, organizer of the festival since 1996, who this year will be recognized with the Golden Cask for her work. Vargas was the winner of the general category, but there was also a prize at the venue, which was for Pelayo Rodríguez, from Rincón de Celia. “Good pouring, good cider and some cachopos as there are no others” declared the pourer to this media.
Xixón’s contest is one of the most important in the championship. Yesterday the town hall square was full of people from locals and tourists who watched with great attention the 53 participants of the contest. “An absolute record” affirmed Enrique Tuya, coordinator of the championship. It should be noted that at the end of the competition, the delivery of “La Etiquetatina Más Guapina” (Nicest cider label) took place, given by each edition of the Sidrastur collection group. The new image of Cabueñes that has seen the light this year has been awarded for what the cidermaker Diego Agüera was “very grateful” for the distinction.
Today is a key day within Xixón’s Natural Cider Festival. One more year we will try to beat the record of pouring. To achieve this, 9.403 + 1 must pour one culín at a time. The appointment, as in previous editions, is on Poniente beach. People will be able to access the pouring area from 18:00 hours. Two hours later, at 8:00 p.m., it will be the moment in which all attendees, bottle in hand, will return – hopefully – to make history in one of the cities with the largest Asturies cider culture.
